چکیده

We consider a class of Hamiltonians with three degrees of freedom that can be mapped into quasi-periodically driven pendulums. The purpose of this paper is to determine the threshold of the break-up of invariant tori with a specific frequency vector. We apply two techniques : the frequency map analysis and renormalizationgroup methods. The renormalization transformation acting on a Hamiltonian is a canonical change of coordinates which is a combination of a partial elimination of the irrelevant modes of the Hamiltonian and a rescaling of phase space around the considered torus. We give numerical evidence that the critical coupling at which the renormalization transformation starts to diverge is the same as the value given by the frequency map analysis for the break-up of invariant tori. Furthermore, we obtain by these methods numerical values of the threshold of the break-up of the last invariant torus.

An Approximate Renormalization for the Break-up of Invariant Tori with Three Frequencies

Renormalization theory provides a description of the destruction of invariant tori for Hamiltonian systems of 11/2 or 2 degrees of freedom, and explains the self-similarity and the universality of the structures observed. A similar theory for higher dimensional Hamiltonian systems has proved elusive. Here we construct an approximate renormalization for a Hamiltonian system with 21/2 degrees of ...

Towards an Understanding of the Break-up of Invariant Tori

Theories describing the existence, destruction and ultimate fate of invariant tori for Hamiltonian systems of 11/2 or 2 degrees of freedom (or equivalently area preserving mappings) are well established. Similar results for higher dimensional Hamiltonian systems have proved elusive. We discuss several techniques for studying the existence and break-up of invariant tori for 21/2 degrees of freed...

Magnetic Field Lines, Hamiltonian Dynamics, and Nontwist Systems

Magnetic field lines typically do not behave as described in the symmetrical situations treated in conventional physics textbooks. Instead, they behave in a chaotic manner; in fact, magnetic field lines are trajectories of Hamiltonian systems. Consequently the quest for fusion energy has interwoven, for 50 years, the study of magnetic field configurations and Hamiltonian systems theory. The man...

Persistence of Hyperbolic Tori in Hamiltonian Systems

We generalize the well-known result of Graff and Zehnder on the persistence of hyperbolic invariant tori in Hamiltonian systems by considering non-Floquet, frequency varying normal forms and allowing the degeneracy of the unperturbed frequencies. The preservation of part or full frequency components associated to the degree of non-degeneracy is considered. As applications, we consider the persi...
